The Royer SF-24 is an active stereo ribbon microphone with two ribbons stacked vertically in a Blumlein configuration at 90 degrees to one another.
The SF-24 is a phantom powered version of the SF-12 and the active circuitry means that is has a higher output and is as sensitive as standard condenser microphones. Standard ribbon microphones require preamps with large amounts of gain, but because the SF-24 has a higher output, it will work effectively with most preamps.
Just like the SF-12, the SF-24 has great stereo separation, imaging and phase compatibility between the sides. A Y-adapter is included which splits into two labelled XLR connectors for the upper and lower capsules.
The SF-24 performs brilliantly across many applications including drum overheads, orchestras, piano and other acoustic instruments. Depending on the microphone placement, the SF-24 can be particularly useful for capturing the acoustic environment as well.
